Breathing is very important for obvious reasons, but breathing health and awareness can affect more than we think. The quality of our breathing can affect our sleep, mood, posture, weight, concentration, activity and immune system. Check out the Breathing and Health article, provided by our HMSA Employee Assistance Program, to learn about breathing health and the following techniques to increase breathing awareness:
- Take a deep breath to get started. Tune into your breathing, and notice that when we put attention on something, it can begin to change.
- Breathe in and out through your nose.
- Slow your breathing down and extend your outbreath a little longer than your inbreath, gradually increasing that ratio. Slowing down the breath evokes the relaxation response and takes us out of flight or fight mode.
