Gainful Employment hold on student accounts to be removed due to change in federal requirements

The college has removed a registration hold from many students’ accounts following a change in federal regulations. As printed in The Star at the end of June, the U.S. Department of Education was requiring all students in certain certificate programs designated as “Gainful Employment” programs to read disclosures about program cost and program length prior to signing up for classes. LCC had placed a registration hold to ensure students read the information.

Technically, the Gainful Employment requirements went into effect on July 1, 2019. However, on June 28, the Department of Education announced it was ending the regulation, effective July 1, 2020. In this announcement, it also allowed schools to implement the rescission immediately. LCC, along with nearly all our peer institutions, has opted to early implement the rescission to eliminate both a barrier to student registration and an administrative burden.
