Register to vote at LCC and JC on Sept. 17 in honor of U.S. Constitution Day

Lansing Community College and Jackson College have teamed up to register voters for the 2014 election. This effort is part of U.S. Constitution Day, Thursday, Sept. 17.

At LCC, students and community members may register to vote between 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 17. Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope will help register prospective voters at LCC with stations in front of the Arts and Sciences Building and in the lobby of Gannon Building, on main campus.

To be eligible to register to vote, a person must be at least 18 years old by Election Day, a resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are applying to register, and a U.S. Citizen. The deadline for registering to vote in the Nov. 4 general election is on Oct. 6.

U.S. Constitution Day was established by Congress to commemorate the signing of the Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Several constitutional provisions – including the 14th Amendment guaranteeing equal protection under the law, the 15th Amendment guaranteeing the right of former male slaves to vote, and the 19th Amendment guaranteeing the right of women to vote – address the right to vote.
