Open to all: Biggest Loser Contest

“Biggest Loser” kickoff is Friday, Feb. 7th from 11:30-1PM in the Administration Boardroom.

All faculty & staff are invited to participate!

The “Biggest Loser” weight loss challenge is back by popular demand!

EDF and Choosing Health!® are working together so all faculty & staff can participate in the Biggest Loser events.

Attend the kickoff on Friday, Feb. 7th to weigh in. If you’re not able to attend the kickoff, you can weigh in at the HHS Division office (HHS 108) until March 14th.

Stay tuned for fun & educational events throughout the challenge.

The Biggest Loser Challenge goes through May 2nd.

Literary Ireland Study Abroad

Sarah Gibbons and Teresa Purvis will be team-teaching ASST 290 Literary Ireland Study Abroad this spring semester (March 14 class begins; May 18-June 4 travel). The course meets for 8 two-hour sessions on Main Campus, and concludes with the travel portion of the course May 18-June 4.

Literary Ireland is offered as a three-credit course, and also as a non-credit CCE offering. Applications are due Thursday, Feb. 20. The forms may be found on the LCC Global Education web page.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., in room A&S 112 and on Friday, Feb. 7, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at LCC East in room 214, are information meetings open to all.

Judy Post Retirement Information

Judy Post will be retiring from Lansing Community College as of February 28th. We want to thank Judy for her 28 years of dedication and customer service at the College. She has led the Student Finance office through transition the last 2 years, and prior to that she was the Assistant to the Director of Student Finance and worked in Financial Aid.

We are happy to announce that Jennifer Sevic has accepted the Interim Student Finance Director position until a search process is completed.

We will miss Judy and ask for all to wish her well in her retirement.

Literary Ireland – Short Term Study Abroad Program

When: May 18 – June 4, 2014 (between spring and summer semesters)

Where: We will travel to Dublin, Sligo, and Galway in the Republic of Ireland, with day trips in and around these three “home” bases.

What: Irish literature and mythology are the primary subjects covered.

Who: Literary Ireland is open to LCC students and community members.

How much: Estimated cost is $3500.
The estimated cost includes all lodging in Dublin, Sligo, and Galway, all ground transportation, all activity tickets and admissions, most meals, in-district tuition, and estimated airfare. (Students will receive a list of recommended flights and purchase their airfare individually.)

How to apply and register?
Go to Global Education Literary Ireland 2014 or to apply. Students will be able to register when their applications have been reviewed and they have been accepted to the program.

Passing of Steve Carlson’s mother

We are sorry to report that Steve Carlson’s mother, Eva Carlson, passed away on Friday, January 24, 2014. Steve is a full-time chemistry faculty member in the Science Department.

ST JOSEPH – Eva H. Carlson, 99, of St. Joseph, passed away, Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at Caretel Inns of Lakeland in St. Joseph.

A Celebration of Life Eternal will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Court and Market St., St. Joseph. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery, St. Joseph. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church or St Joseph-Lincoln Senior Center. Those wishing to sign Eva’s Memory Book online may do so at
Eva was born March 26, 1914, in Bridgman to Amiel and Martha (Backus) Dass.

She was employed at Whirlpool Corp. before starting her family, and retired after twenty years from Maude Preston Palenske Library in St. Joseph. On Sept. 15, 1945, she married Clyde H. Carlson in West Palm Beach, Fla. Eva was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, St. Joseph, and was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Eva is survived by her four sons: Stephen (Luana) Carlson of DeWitt, Mich., Thomas (Marge) Carlson of Ludington, Douglas (Beverly) Carlson of Mount Vernon, Ill., and Dennis Carlson of Wyoming, Mich.; six grandchildren: Stephanie (Phil) Kowatch, Andrea (Joseph) Meiser, Matthew (Lesley) Carlson, Scott (Kelte) Carlson, John Carlson and Bryan Mazur; six great-grandchildren: Eva, Leo, Audrey, Hernik, Eli and Micah and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde H. Carlson on Feb. 14, 2002, and by three brothers and two sisters.
